Gear Up for Winter Running: Essentials for You and Your Dog

Ali and Guiness Canicross

As the air turns crisp and the ground gets covered in a soft blanket of snow, many runners are faced with a dilemma: how to keep up their outdoor running routine during the winter months?

If you run canicross you now have to worry about how to keep your dog comfortable and safe during chilly runs.

Don’t worry! We’ve compiled a list of essential gear for both you and your dog to conquer winter running together.

Humans:

Moisture-Wicking Base Layers: Stay cozy and dry with moisture-wicking base layers. These will help regulate your body temperature by wicking sweat away from your skin, preventing discomfort from damp clothing. Opt for a combination of long-sleeve tops and thermal leggings to maintain your body heat.

Insulated Running Jacket: A high-quality insulated running jacket is your first line of defense against the winter chill. Look for a jacket that offers both warmth and breathability to regulate your body temperature during intense runs. Don’t forget to choose one with reflective elements to enhance visibility in low-light conditions.

Wind-Resistant Pants: Invest in a pair of wind-resistant and insulated running pants to protect your legs from icy winds. Look for pants with zippered pockets to keep your essentials secure while you’re on the move.

Thermal Gloves and Headwear:  Keep your extremities warm with thermal gloves and a snug beanie or headband. Cold hands and ears can be distracting during a run, so ensure these accessories are part of your winter running ensemble.

Trail Running Shoes with Traction or winter running shoes: Winter often means slippery surfaces, so opt for trail running shoes that offer better traction on snow and ice. Look for shoes with lugged soles and water-resistant uppers to keep your feet comfortable and stable during your runs. You can also get a winter running shoe that is designed specifically for icy slippery conditions.

For Your Dog:

Insulated Dog Jacket: Just like you, your canine companion needs cold weather protection. Opt for a well-fitting jacket that covers the torso and chest, offering warmth without limiting mobility. Ensure it features reflective accents for visibility. An insulated jacket is ideal for walks, pre-activity warmth, and post-activity comfort, ensuring your dog stays cozy throughout.

Insulated Dog Sweater: Opting for an insulated sweater for your dog instead of a winter jacket during winter activities offers a range of advantages. With its lightweight and less bulky design, an insulated sweater grants increased mobility and freedom of movement, crucial for activities like playing and running in the snow. The layering capability provides adaptable warmth, and its breathability prevents overheating. This versatile choice is great for both indoor and outdoor settings, while the snug fit ensures comfort and ease of movement and it can be worn underneath the jacket. The sweater’s ability to regulate body temperature and its fashionable options make it a practical and stylish solution for keeping your dog warm and active during winter adventures.

Dog Booties: Snow, ice, and salted roads can be harsh on your dog’s paws. Dog booties provide a protective barrier, preventing snow and ice from getting between their paw pads. Look for options with rugged soles for extra grip.

Moisture-Resistant Dog Bedding: After a chilly run, your dog will appreciate a warm and cozy resting spot. Invest in moisture-resistant bedding that provides insulation from the cold ground and is easy to clean.

LED Collar or Light: With reduced daylight hours, it’s crucial to keep your dog visible during early morning or late evening runs. Attach an LED collar or a light to their harness to ensure passing vehicles and pedestrians can spot them.

Winter running with your dog can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience with the right gear.

Prioritise safety and comfort for both you and your pup by investing in these essential items.

Remember to check the weather forecast before heading out and adjust your plans accordingly.

With the right preparation, you can embark on invigorating winter runs while forging an even stronger bond with your dog, gear up, embrace the winter wonderland, and keep those paws and feet pounding the snowy trails!
