Taking the dogs out usually means some type of commotion from the dogs, especially when they see us put on our running clothes. This means fun!
If your dogs are anything like ours, it’s lots of excitement, followed by lots of harassment while they jump at the door, brush up against you, and sometimes almost knock you over. Because of the commotion, sometimes the little things can be missed.
When you load your dogs into the car, take 20-30 seconds to do a quick gear check. Typically, my bike is across the garage, so take the time to do the following quick checks:
Brakes: Check both your front and back brakes. While you’re walking to the car, apply one brake at a time to make sure they engage.
Shocks: While you’re applying your front brakes, press down on your shocks to make sure they are rebounding properly. If they are too soft or too hard, make your adjustments as needed.
Putting the bike up on the bike rack gives you a good perspective to do a quick visual check on the rest of the components.
Chain: Inspect your chain for any signs of rust or damage. Make sure it is properly lubricated.
Tires: Take a look at your tire treads and health; examine your tires to make sure they are in good condition. Check your tire pressure to ensure it is at the recommended level. Check your tire bolts, make sure your wheels are secure and that they are on tightly.
Cables: Check your cables to make sure they are not frayed, leaking, or damaged.
Once you arrive at your destination, before taking the dogs out of the car, take your bike off the rack and do a quick spin around the parking lot. This is when you will do a final quick check before heading out.
Seat Positioning: Check that your seat height is correct and make adjustments as needed.
Gears: Make sure your gears are working and that your bike is in an appropriate gear.
Go for your ride and enjoy!
It is a good idea to do regular maintenance on your bike; check with your local bike shops for rates and recommended service.
If you’re in the Central Alberta area I highly recommend Cal’s Cycle They have a great selection of bikes and gear and the customer service is amazing!
