If you have ever seen Jackie and me at a race in the spring, late fall, or in the winter, chances are you’ve seen our dogs wearing either a sweater or a jacket.
My first reaction to Jackie when she bought one for Niko was, “Why did you buy him that? He’s a dog and has fur… Are you just trying to make him boujee?”
And her answer was yes … but when you actually do some research, they can be very beneficial as well as stylish.
Most of the canicross events are held in places that are shared with the public, and it makes more sense to hold these events early in the morning before “normal” people come to enjoy the park or trail that we are running on.
Each dog is different; Niko gets colder faster than Luka does, so having a sweater benefits Niko. Luka does have one, but he really doesn’t like clothes, so we only put his sweater on when he really needs it.
Besides making a fashion statement, here are some other benefits to wearing a sweater.
Number 1, as I already mentioned above, is Temperature Regulation. Just like humans, dogs feel the cold, especially those with short fur or smaller bodies. During colder months or in chilly climates, dog sweaters provide essential warmth, helping them maintain a comfortable body temperature. This is particularly crucial for older dogs or those with health conditions that make them more sensitive to temperature changes.
Number 2, they act as a protective layer. Dog sweaters act as a protective layer against various elements. They shield your pet’s skin from harsh winds, snow, rain, or excessive sunlight. In winter, they prevent frostbite and hypothermia by providing an extra barrier against the cold ground and icy winds.
Number 3, they can help with anxiety and comfort. Believe it or not, some dogs find comfort in wearing sweaters. Similar to how swaddling a baby can provide a sense of security, snug-fitting sweaters can have a calming effect on nervous or anxious dogs. The gentle pressure can alleviate stress and anxiety in certain situations.
Choosing the Right Sweater When selecting a dog sweater, consider your pet’s size, breed, and the climate in which you live. Opt for materials that are comfortable, breathable, and easy to wash. Ensure the sweater fits well without restricting movement or causing discomfort.
We use Ruffwear Sweaters; they fit well, they are strong and durable, and they have a good range of colors and designs available.
