"When people find out that I do Canicross, one of the first things they ask is how I got started."
It was a paid Facebook ad in 2018 that caught my attention.
It involved running and dogs, both things I love.
I clicked on the ad, it was a 3 day course where you learned how to run with your dog as a team.
Take my money!
At that time I was training for a full marathon and I thought this was a perfect change of distance and speed.
I did most of my training runs with my lab/Shepherd Brody anyway so why not learn how to engage him in pulling.
It was probably the best decision I made, I learned how to run with him in front of me, pulling me to go faster.
The best part is physically and mentally exhausted Brody!
A 5km canicross run did more mentally and physically than a 15km trail run. I was hooked from that moment.
I continued to train for my marathon, deep down knowing that I would eventually switch my training plan to a fast 5km vs a 42km.
After 2 full marathons I was deep into Harness racing, learning about bikejore, skijore, canitrail, all the things around dog harness sports.
I completely changed my goals and did more speed work, interval runs, nothing over 12-15km. Focused all my time on getting faster and holding the endurance. By Fall of 2019, I signed up for Nationals in QC, bought a eurohound and completely shifted from road races to short 5km sprints with dogs and I have loved every minute of it.
